Endocannabinoids are cannabis-like molecules that are naturally produced within the human body. What are their functions?
The primary function of the endocannabinoid system, which is also commonly known as the CBD ECS, is to maintain homeostasis. This term refers to a state of biological balance within our bodies in response to various internal and external stressors as well as changes in the environment.
Further studies of the CBD ECS have revealed the age and surprising evolution of this prominent system. It is believed that this feature has existed as long as mankind itself, which means it has been evolving for more than 500 million years. Moreover, the ECS is not only present in the human body, but it also exists in all vertebrates. Meaning, all mammals, amphibians, fish, birds, reptiles, and similar species that possess a backbone have one, and therefore, they produce endocannabinoids.
Initially, there was a common misconception that endocannabinoid receptors were only present in the brain and nerves. However, this was later proven to be erroneous. Continuing research confirmed that these receptors are, in fact, present throughout the body. Moreover, it is now known that the ECS is involved in a myriad of processes, such as pain management, reproductive function, sleep, metabolism, appetite, stress, memory, mood, and immune function.
